Spectacular Food For You book launch raises over £115k for Jewish charity Norwood
Food For You, a North-West London based charity committee set up in 2004, launched their fifth and finest cook book, entitled Simply Food For You, on Thursday 7 September. Around £25,000 was raised on the day, taking the total raised so far to over £115,000 through donations and pre-orders with all of the proceeds going directly to Norwood.
The official launch took place at a private home in Hampstead, North-West London and books are now available to buy online at www.simplyfoodforyou.org.uk for £25.
The event was an all-day open house from 8am – 8pm, with stalls selling artisan goods and homeware (including glassware made by people Norwood supports), as well as refreshments featured in the book. Members of Food For You, Norwood dignitaries and volunteers and press attended the event.
Proceeds from the new book, Simply Food For You, will fund a full refurbishment of Norwood’s Kennedy Leigh family centre kitchen, which will be re-launched as Sara’s Kitchen to honour the charity for making it possible. Sara’s Kitchen will be a working kitchen, offering food training and cooking courses for young adults with learning disabilities, providing them with skills from food preparation, barista training and customer service to food hygiene and retail operations. The training courses will also promote independence and social skills and Sara’s Kitchen will service both the centre and local community.
The Simply Food For You charity campaign is dedicated to Sara Morein, a tireless and effervescent member of the Food For You team who sadly passed away in January 2015. The book, as well as the new Sara’s Kitchen at the Kennedy Leigh Centre, has been created to honour her memory and the legacy of her work.
Susie Kahn, head of Food For You’s charity committee, said: “As a team we’ve worked together on food-related projects for years. As Sara loved both food and helping others, we wanted to bring her two passions together with this project. We visited Michael [Kuperberg] and other volunteers at Kennedy Leigh and we saw the incredible potential for the current barista courses to be extended to catering and other, related skills. We felt instantly this was the right thing to do. We’ve sold hundreds of books today, so we’re very pleased. We wanted today to have an artisan feel, hence the crafts stalls. All the people who have stalls here today have generously agreed to donate 20% of the proceeds from today to Norwood also, so that should really help with the money we raise.”
Michael Kuperberg, who Norwood supports and who will work in Sara’s Kitchen, said: “I’m looking forward to working in Sara’s Kitchen with all the new facilities. Working with Roberto the head chef is a great experience. He’s firm but fair, but it’s always fun. He’s not quite Gordon Ramsay! The money raised today will do a lot to help Norwood, which makes me really happy. Norwood is the most amazing charity and I couldn’t do without them in my life.”
Norwood chairman David Ereira added: “Days like this mean so much to Norwood. Today pulls together a local committee that’s opened its doors to the community, who can meet the people we support and see a bit about what we’re about. So, it’s incredibly important. I knew Sara through my wife, who is on the committee. She would have been smiling and incredibly proud if she could have seen everyone here today and the incredible amounts being raised for charity.”
Explaining the decision to choose Norwood for the latest project, David Morein, the husband of Sara Morein, said: “This charity encapsulates two of Sara’s main passions: a love of preparing and providing delicious food and a genuine care and interest in helping others. By supporting Sara’s Kitchen at Norwood, young adults with learning difficulties will be taught various aspects of food preparation and hygiene. On this journey they will acquire the immeasurable joys of gaining independence, self-confidence and friendships that we feel sure will benefit them in all aspects of life. I cannot think of a more apt and meaningful way to honour Sara’s memory and provide a legacy that will help others for many years to come “

About Food For You
Food For You was a concept borne in conversation around a suburban kitchen table, back in 2004. The aim, then, was to create a ‘little cookbook’ to raise some money to help feed the hungry and needy. It truly was only ever going to be a humble, self-financed, one-off project, produced by a small team of friends. The result was ‘Have We Got Food For You’, which proved to be an overwhelming success, with two print runs, selling 1500 copies and most importantly raising £80,000.
Basking in the unexpected success, the original core group rapidly expanded, and so did its resources – it was soon apparent that FFY was armed with precious capabilities to take its concept even further: with professionals including caterers, stylists, event organisers, PRs, writers and a graphic designer etc., amongst the crew, it would have been foolish or remiss not to capitalise!
Six publications later, Food For You has established a professional, best-selling series covering hundreds of recipes, selling thousands of copies and raising overall, a staggering £1.5m for a variety of charitable sectors including: mental health organisations, and programmes for vulnerable youth.
