What is Family Support?

Each of our three Children & Family Centres has a Family Support team. Our aim is to provide practical and emotional support for:

  • Children in need
  • Young adults with learning disabilities
  • Adults with learning disabilities
  • The parents and families of children and adults with special needs.

What we do

Family support teams

Our Family Support teams help any member of a family with all sorts of issues, including:

  • New parenthood
  • The Terrible Twos
  • Living with teenagers
  • Bullying
  • Self-esteem
  • Abuse
  • Bereavement and other losses
  • Divorce and separation
  • Peer group pressure.

Social workers

Our social workers for adults support people with learning disabilities and their families. We support them in making choices about their lives and talking about those choices with their families and other people.

We can listen and support with lots of different issues, including:

  • Feelings
  • Relationships with other people
  • Changing where and how they live
  • Getting a job
  • How to learn new skills
  • Doing fun activities with others
  • Being safe at home and when out.

We sometimes run groups when there are a few people who could benefit from sharing their experiences with other people.

About family support and social work at Norwood

People who come to us for support are always given direct access to our teams.

We are keen to ensure that the advice, care and support we offer is as responsive as possible. We also run a Strengthening Families Strengthening Communities parenting programme for parents of children from 0-18.

If we find we aren’t able to help, our social workers help people to access the right services elsewhere.

We are also sometimes able to advise about financial support for individuals or families in need.

If you think we can help, please get in touch using the details on the right.
