Giving people real choice about where they live

Somers Court supported living accommodation

Part of our work at Norwood is giving adults with learning disabilities the support they need to choose where they live.

Norwood has different types of homes and flats across London, Hertfordshire and Berkshire. In each one, housing support is available according to each person’s needs. Adults with learning disabilities can choose between sharing a house with 3-6 people, sharing a flat or living on their own.

Housing support staff are chosen specifically to meet the needs of the disabled person or people living in the home or flat.

At Norwood, we always make sure our tenants understand the tenancy agreement that they sign. We use a specially adapted, Easy Read tenancy agreement.  We also give our tenants support to help them make sure both the rent and the service charges are paid. Service charges pay for:

  • Keeping their home in good condition
  • Heating and lighting
  • The support to help tenants maintain their tenancies
  • Maintaining community areas.

Rent can be claimed through Housing Benefit or Local Housing Allowance, and we can offer assistance with making housing benefit claims where needed. There may also be other bills to pay and staff support tenants in claiming benefits. We also help tenants budget for all their living expenses.

As well as providing accommodation, we also help individuals who want to rent from private landlords or housing associations. Tenants who do this have more choice of location and type of accommodation.

We offer ongoing support to ensure that tenants maintain their tenancies successfully. If any problems arise, we work with tenants to resolve them.
