Nicola’s Story

From service user to employee

Nicola on the phone

Office Administrator at the Employment Resource Centre in Stanmore

Nicola was 26-years-old when she joined Links, Norwood’s recreational service, as a part-time Office Administrator. This was just four years after originally participating in the service as a member. At the time, she was unemployed and struggling to find a suitable post. “I have a mild learning disability and the Job Centre is not very good at accommodating that.”

“As a Links member myself, I know what’s needed. This is my favourite part of the job, talking to other members and their parents and carers, knowing that my call helps them or may just brighten their day.”

Emma Davis, Manager - Work Skills and Employment, has watched Nicola’s confidence grow. “Initially, Nicola needed more support, but now she knows how to deal with situations independently and uses her own initiative. She’s excellent when dealing with people on the phone and is a valued member of the team.”

Nicola has been able to make the most of training opportunities provided by Norwood, and has attended a range of courses. The Employment Service is actively looking at further opportunities for Nicola within Norwood. “My biggest personal achievement is getting my job and keeping it for as long as I have.”
