Northern Vietnam: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Rivers and Rice
Northern Vietnam: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Rivers and Rice
Thursday 7-Sunday 17 November 2024

10 days • 5 days cycling • 326km

We’re really excited to be adding this stunning itinerary late to our 2024 programme.

Flying into the craziness of Hanoi, we’re settling in for a couple of days with the option of a visit to the delights and limestone karst mountains of UNESCO World Heritage Ha Long Bay, before starting our cycle on Sunday. Riding south into the heart of the delta, it’s rice paddies and traditional villages with a cruise of the Ngo Dong river to Ninh Binh and our hotel for the next two nights. It doesn’t stop there. While we may be battling with some long days in the saddle, undulating roads and some humid conditions, there’s a wonderous reprieve at Cuc Phuong, Vietnam’s largest national park, where we visit the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre. We then follow the historic Ho Chi Minh trails cycling on small tarmac roads with dramatic mountain scenery and a section along the along the Buoi River before finally resting at Mai Chau.

An absorbing experience that combines the challenge of cycling off the beaten track with dramatic backdrops and the calming tranquillity of a completely different culture, places are limited and we recommend booking early.

How challenging is it?

This is a moderately challenging ride. We’ll have some long daily distances and you’ll need to be used to being in the saddle for 6-7 hours a day, over consecutive days. But while there will be a few significant climbs, there is nothing too overwhelming and the challenge will be cycling in humid conditions. The landscape, the cycling along the river and through the tranquillity of picturesque rice paddies will surely allow your mind to wander as we journey from our starting point in Hanoi on a mix of tarmac and off road tracks. Ideally you should be a keen cyclist, enjoy training and ride regularly. You should be used to doing long rides in the countryside of 6 hours +. You should be doing regular exercise – with some serious cycle training.
